L-TRYPTOPHAN - The Sleep Supplement.
L-Tryptophan is a vital human amino acid, which the body cannot make itself - that must therefore be supplied via food or dietary supplements.
L-Tryptophan was discovered in 1901. It is a precursor of nicotinic acid (also niacin: vitamin B3) and has the character of a provitamin. Vitamin B3 is essential for the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Furthermore, the neurotransmitter serotonin is produced by L-Tryptophan in the human organism.
Another messenger in the brain is melatonin. It is formed in the pituitary gland from the serotonin and regulates the sleep-wake cycle.
Athletes often have an increased need for tryptophan, since its intake can be hindered by the simultaneous ingestion of other amino acids (from, for example, protein powder).
