Sport and lactic acid production
During training, especially during short but very intensive exertion, lactic acid or lactate accumulates in our muscles. The reason is an insufficient oxygen supply of the muscle. In this state, the body enters the so-called anaerobic metabolism in order to ensure the energy supply for muscle contraction.
During prolonged stress, the body can no longer efficiently break down the resulting lactate, which causes the muscle to overacidify - the pH value drops. Excessive acidity can inhibit the body's ability to absorb nutrients, produce new cells or repair damaged tissue. At the same time, a too acidic environment can reduce performance as muscles begin to ""burn"" and tire.
L-Carnosine - the pH buffer
Carnosine is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is mainly found in muscle fibres and can counteract acidosis there. It acts as a so-called ""pH buffer"", in which it ""buffers"" the protons (positively charged hydrogen ions, H+) produced during the increase of the pH value. Thus L-carnosine can contribute to the deacidification of the stressed muscle.
